Mississippi 2020 Network, Inc.

Our Mission:
Raising Awareness About Sustainability . . .

The members of Mississippi 2020 Network are citizens who believe any quality future for humans, as well as other life forms, depends on learning to live in harmony with the Earth's people and its ecosystems. It is reasonable since the Earth is primary and everything else is derivative. All life flows from the Earth's gifts of air, water, soil, plants, and animals. Shifting from a human-centered worldview to an Earth-centered view will not be easy, but continuing on the present course will be disastrous  If you doubt this, see Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth movie.

2020's purpose is to transform the State of Mississippi, one sustainable household, community, institution, business, and government at a time. We believe it is possible for our state to become the first sustainable state in the South. Our 21 years of experience, our model projects, our valued contacts and our print and audio-visual resources are geared to support the regeneration of civic engagement. Beginning with our Sustainable Community presentation citizens across Mississippi are deciding to accept the challenge of slowly creating a balance economy, environment and community.

Equally important is our effort to raise public awareness to the urgency of action that will change the course of our society from its collision course with the natural world. We do this with conferences like the Vision 2020  Future Fair, workshops, letters to the editor, our newsletter, award winning elementary school project Growing Good Citizens, discussion courses, and Green Habitat home. We realize our dream will require many linked communities of people providing local leadership with exceptional courage and imagination, and a commitment "for the duration". We are proud to motivate and nurture this growing network.

Nothing else, short of an economic or ecological catastrophe, will cause humans to rethink the damage we are doing to the Earth's systems. Our confidence of success is fortified by a quote from Seven Tomorrows: The one resource that is boundless and abundant in all our futures is the human spirit. Of all the variables that one must consider when looking ahead, it is the one that remains positive. Ultimately, the future of our country and our planet does not lie entirely in external events, but also with the will of its inhabitants."
