in the Green Habitat Home in Jackson, Mississippi . . .
This first Earth Friendly home in Mississippi was finished in August, 2003. Please come and visit the house at 948 Central Ave in Jackson, Mississippi. Lift a hammer and learn to save water, cut your utility bills, and
grow and eat healthy organic vegetables. The house is making news!
Goal of this Project:
To demonstrate the design, materials, and the appliances necessary for Jackson housing to meet sustainable standards for energy
consumption, water use, and maintenance.
To gather and publicize data on the reduced living cost for the family
living in the house.
To show that "green" living is something anyone of any economic level can accomplish.

The Steps:
Design team researches the materials and produces a plan meeting the following criteria:
Materials:
Lowest travel distance for materials to job site
Lowest environmental damage of manufacture of materials
Lowest construction cost
Lowest maintenance and longest durability
Most benign for health of occupants
Design:
Southern exposure for solar panels
Deciduous trees for summer shade
Dimensions of windows and ceiling for natural
cooling, extended overhang
Roof water diverted to a
pair of 500 gal. tanks
Paving stone for concrete driveway and walks to reduce heat absorption and runoff of rain water
Landscaping requiring minimum of water
Cellulose insulation (recycled newsprint)/double paned windows
Site near bus line

For Water Savings:
Low-flush toilets
Low-flow shower heads
Rain water reuse system for lawn/garden and toilet
For Energy Savings:
Photo-voltaic solar panels on roof, which generate electricity
Attic fan - which removes hot air from attic
Three light wells on the roof to provide natural daytime light in the house.
Lumber grown under sustainable forestry guidelines as near to the Habitat House as possible.
Construction by volunteers, architects, and Habitat carpenters.
Selection of owner willing to cooperate on the one year collection of living costs data.
Training of family to manage house and systems by Mississippi 2020 member skilled in sustainable living techniques.
first to try the "Pay-As-You-Throw" solid waste plan.
